Prof. Jannie Ferreira is a South African academic and sports vision specialist associated with the University of Johannesburg from which he retired in 2013. He published more than 150 scientific papers, presented on numerous conferences all over the world and supervised dozens of postgraduate students. He is still in private practice and focuses on sports vision, learning and reading difficulties in children, and coaching science. His main focus now lies with helping children with learning and reading problems. He has received world wide recognition for his work on the role of the dominance factor in learning and reading.

He earned degrees in physiology and optometry, including a PhD in Physiology and B Optom (cum laude) from the former Rand Afrikaans University. He founded the Academy of Sports Vision at Rand Afrikaans University in 2001, which was recognized by the IOC as one of the best three of its kind in the world. He participated in high-performance sport structures linked to SASCOC and coaching standards development in South Africa. He was also the President of the Golden Lions Franchise , Member of the South African Rugby Union Presidents Council and Chair of committees responsible for appointing Springbok and national coaches.

Prof. Jannie Ferreira is synonymous with Phelophepa health care train, which is his brainchild, to this day and received numerous rewards for this. Over the years he also received many prestigious awards for his contribution to community eye care in South Africa. The last one was the SAOA Centennial Celebration Award For Exceptional Dedication to the Provision of Eye Care to Communities and Individuals in need over time.
